Andy Makes It Rain

Boy, that escalated quickly!

I am officially back from my much needed but far too long hiatus on the blog, and SU is back from their layoff as well with a trouncing of their first Big East opponent, Seton Hall, 100-76.

I attended the game and even though The Hall hung tough for a little bit in the first half, this game was never in doubt.  Right from the get-go, the Orange were dropping bombs like they were playing Call of Duty or something.  Jonny, Andy, and the community worker himself Mr. Eric Devendorf all were on point tonight.  Rautins continued his two-game tear, hitting 7 threes tonight, after making 9 against Coppin State. He had 26 points for the night.  Devo made his return after a two-game absence and quickly picked up where he left off, contributing 20 off the bench.

I liked a lot of things that I saw at the game, particularly how smooth the guys' general demeanor is.  Granted, this is Seton Hall, a team far inferior to our talent level, but still.  Absolutely nothing phases this Orange team it seems like, and save for that minor hiccup against Cleveland State, they've been rolling all year long.

Really, I've said this before and I hate to continue to harp on it, but this is unquestionably the most comfortable I've felt about an SU squad since 2003.  It's just comforting to see the way that everyone knows plays their role, the way they seem to get along, and the absolute thrashings that this team is capable of putting on foes.

While everyone was thoroughly disappointed with the way the 2008 season ended, I think that A LOT of central New Yorkers can't wait to find out how the 2009 one ends.  I know that I'm not alone in stating that my excitement level right now sits at about a 13.  Let's just hope that little injury Paul Harris seemed to have near the end of the first half is nothing too big. It's great to be back here on the Warriors domain, and Go Orange!

SU-SHU Quick Preview

Ah, the Big East.

It's about time. The Big East season is upon us. Our first victim is Seton Hall. The Pirates come in to the game at 9-3 with victories over Virginia Tech, and USC. However, they got banged out by Memphis by 14. The 'Cuse come in at 12-1, ranked #13 in the latest AP polls. We have Devendorf back, and all appears to be well in 'cuse country. Jeremy Hazel is going to be our "2-3ZoneHaveACareerNight" guy tonight. He dropped 32 against Memphis, and is the Pirates' leading scorer. Still not enought though....

Big Monday is upon us...

Our transition from the NFL (I would say football in general, but transitioning from college football is far too easy these days in Central NY) to basketball becomes a little easier from here on out. Bienvenidos, Big Monday, we missed you. Tonight's matchup between Georgetown and UConn should be a goodie. G'town is 9-1, with their only loss being to my Ex-University, The Tennessee Vols. Meanwhile, UConn has been pretty beastly, and is sitting pretty at 11-0. I personally am going with UConn by about 12, however the game being closer than what the final score indicates.

But here is my question. Why does Syracuse only have one "Big Monday" game? Granted, the preseason underestimation by everyone outside of the 'Cuse probably had something to do with it. But regardless. Your telling me a Syracuse-Georgetown matchup or a Syracuse-UConn matchup is not Big Monday worthy? Well I took the liberty of looking up what those monday night matchups were of the weeks that Syracuse plays Georgetown or UConn and heres what I got:

Week of Jan. 12 (SU-GU that wednesday)- Louisville v. Notre Dame
Week of Feb. 11 (SU-UConn that wed.)-  West Virginia v. Pittsburgh
Week of Feb. 11 (SU-GTown that sat.)- West Virginia v. Pittsburgh

The first Georgetown matchup? Fair enough. Louisville-ND will be a solid matchup. But West Virginia-Pittsburgh? On the same week that you have two HUGE Big East rivalry games? Granted, I'm a Syracuse homer who clearly has a way more biased opinion about what a good game to watch is. But I would venture to say that the majority of the country would rather see a matchup between Syracuse and Georgetown on Big Monday than Pittsburgh against West Virginia.

In case you needed a reminder, here is the last Carrier Dome played Syracuse-Georgetown matchup on Big Monday:

Conclusion- Come on, ESPN.

So much for a snoozer...

Not a blowout, but not by any means was this game ever in doubt.

Like I said earlier, Mckee was going to have to play the game of his life just to keep the game within ten points, and he almost actually did that. I took some free tickets to this game, in row I behind the basket on the Coppin State half of the court...

1. Basically that McKee kid is an animal. 31 pts, 6 steals, 5 assists. His shot sort of reminded me of Stephon Curry in how quick he just sort of threw the ball up there it seemed.

2. It was basically pick your poison night with the big men. Big Daddy Arinze couldn't play defense to save his life (kept leaving his feet), and Rick Jackson should have at least doubled the six rebound he had. Terrible case of butterfingers for him tonight.

3. Johnny Flynn was forcing a ton tonight. Tried way too hard to make plays instead of letting the game come to him. He didn't come out of the game either.

4. Coppin State could be the worst name for a school that I have ever heard.

5. MVP of the game has to goto Rautins obviously, but I think a solid runner up would have to be Paul Harris. Without even noticing it, I looked at the scoreboard and do-it-all had 15 points. He is probably is the best role player on this team.

6. Attendance announced was 17,244. I would say there were 14,000 at best at the dome tonight.

More to come tomorrow....

CopState Pregame..

ZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZzZz.....

This game is going to be a snoozer... I promise.

Coppin State's leading scorer, rebounder, passer, lockdown defender, free throw shooter, and three point threat are all one person: Tywain McKee. He basically is going to have to have the game of his life for this game to be within ten points. Even if he does come out hot and lights up the Syracuse zone they can just switch to man.

And then he would have Johnny Flynn guarding him.

Basically, I'm going with the Orange by 22 tonight. Why 22? I don't know. But I'm going to be right. I was pretty darn close for the Memphis game when I said the final score was going to be 70-63 (actual final 72-65).

Postgame and Memphis

Insert your own caption....

Back on track? Ehhhh I guess so. Heading in to Saturday's matchup with the Tigers the 'Cuse is 10-1 sure. Call me crazy but I think it might take just a liiiitle bit more to beat John Calipari and Tyreke Evans in Memphis on Saturday.

Rick Jackson led the way surprisingly last night with 14 and 8. Eric Devendorf played 33 minutes in the blowout. Is he the new C.C. Sabathia from Milwaukee? The Brew knew they weren't going to have the bath man for long, so they put him on the hill for a ridiculous amount of innings. Could this be the same for Devo with minutes played? One thing is for sure. Eric most certainly built up an appetite after the long night and did some serious pita-pitting on Marshall Street when we saw him after.

But moving on...

Jimmy says we will see what this team is made of on Saturday. He claims we have not played well all season and if we don't play well on Saturday we will be exposed in memphis. The last time these two teams met was on opening night at Madison Square Garden during the 'reakin-ridiculous 2003 season.

Now I'm going to be honest. I know too much about Memphis for my own good. Having gone to the University of Tennessee for a semester (although now relocated to the illustrious harvard on the hill), with the current football situation down there is a lot of basketball talk. Of course about 98% of it is complete nonsense, but occasionally you would get a little tidbit here or there that is useful. And what I learned about Memphis is this: their basketball team is all they got (sound familiar?). They don't care about the Grizzlies (sorry, Hak). Their football team stinks and gets killed by the Vols, even Vanderbilt whenever they play them. Their basketball success is virtually the only thing going for their school right now athletics wise. Oh yeah and their intro is pretty sweet too:
I feel like the Undertaker should walk out of the tunnel when those lights hit...

Watch out for Evans and we should be fine.

What...

Bud Poliquin..... What?!
"And why not? There sails Cedric Jackson's shot from 60 and 70 feet over and over and over again. And there it splashes at the other end every time.

The final score? It doesn't change. It'll forever be Cleveland State 72, Syracuse 69. And the visual? Ditto. The Vikings are still all but cartwheeling out there on the floor of the Carrier Dome while the Orange athletes continue to stumble along to their locker room like extras in one of those old zombie movies.

But you know something? I'll take it. I'll take the theater of it all. I'll take the rush even though, in this case, that rush went poof just . . . like . . . that. And if it makes me a traitor to the cause to suggest that Monday night's zesty loss was better to watch than, oh, Saturday's drab victory over Long Beach State, brand me as such."

Bud how are you a sportswriter in this city? Your attempt to be Skip Bayless is getting to the point of annoyance now. Not sure if you realize this (ESPN sure hasn't), but nobody likes a Skip Bayless. I personally despise the guy. When I read opinionated columns in my hometown, I want them to be for the hometown team. I could see you trying to make this argument if the situation was flip flopped. But you are telling me you would rather take a buzzer beater loss to Cleveland State over a blowout WIN over Long Beach? I question your fanhood sir... and your intelligence level if you think people in Syracuse want to read that...

Ridiculous

Wow.

Sure the game shouldn't have been that close. Sure if the Orange make half of their wide open point blank range lay ups the game isn't that close. Sure if Arinze Onuaku, arguably once of the best centers in the Big East doesn't get outrebounded the game is not a nailbiter.

But it is what it is...

You gotta give credit to CSU for capitalizing on Syracuse mistakes, hitting the boards hard, and at winning with style.  Here are some thoughts from this nonsense:

1) Rautins was about as cold as cold gets. 1 point. 0-3 shooting, with all of them from long range. Not really sure what was going on there. He didn't shoot a lot and when he did he wasn't close. Which confuses me because he took the three for the win. Not saying that I don't want him shooting that, but if he has the confidence there why isn't he shooting more throughout?

2) REBOUNDING. Easily the most frustrating aspect of this game. Cleveland State had fifteen offensive rebounds. FIFTEEN. Come on now. It's not like Cleveland State is a dominating inside force.

3) Here is another stat. SIXTEEN turnovers. Yikes...

4) I guess I was wrong about Bullock. 18 and 5. Not bad at all. I think it was put brilliantly when it came to the interior defense. Tuned in to 96.7 FM (or whatever it is since it changes every year) I heard this remark: "Onuaku is playing defense like he is in foul trouble. But he's not. He only has two fouls." And it wasn't just him. The defense inside was rough throughout.

Obviously, I think it's safe to say that this game was lost on the offensive side of the ball. Eric Devendorf did have one hell of a game though, with 5 threes and 17 points. Johnny Flynn as usual played well also. Onuako had 11, but he missed wiiiide open looks twice in the first two minutes of the game. It was a let down for the big fella last night I think.

Overall what is done is done. Any non conference loss hurts in 'Cuse Country given recent years, but I think in the long run we'll be alright. Gottleib will find a way to say Syracuse sucks because of this game, but hopefully we can right the ship tomorrow.

More to come later...

Um.

After attending Catholic School for 12 years of my life, I can safely say that God just did not want Syracuse to win that basketball game. That's all I can say for now.

SU-CSU Preview...

Johnny Flynn WILL go off tonight.

Two reasons why this game could be close (although I do not think it will be):

1. Gary Waters- He coached at Rutgers from '01-'06. He knows how to be competitive with Syracuse. Granted he isn't playing with the same guys, but I do recall over that stretch of time at Rutgers we had a loss in '03, a massive comeback thanks to a full court press at the RAC in '04 (maybe it was '05?), and a Terrence Roberts three for the win in '06. He has played Syracuse and coached against Jimmy so he knows what it takes to beat him.

2. Xmas Break and Memphis- This could also be a reason for let down on Wednesday. Hopefully the boys aren't thinking like me, because I for one am pumped for the Memphis game.

The biggest threat to the Orange tonight is senior J'Nathan Bullock. He is averaging about 14 pts 7 rebs a game so far. However, I took his stats against Washington, Butler, West Virginia, and Kansas State, and he averaged a less impressive 9 pts 6 boards. Obviously, we need to worry about some unknown shooter who is going to have a career day at the Dome against the Syracuse zone. My guess is Norris Cole with his 11.4 PPG. At the end of the day, 'Cuse win big.

Back on the saddle again...

What's up everyone.

I am finally moved back home to Syracuse, and the posting will definitely pickup from here. Over the last week and a half I have been completing finals at the University of Tennessee, as well as packing up and driving home. Now that I am here and my fellow Warrior's finals finishing up Monday I believe, the posting will definitely pick up.

After chopping down my Christmas tree, I came back and watched the SU-LBSU game. While this one was relatively close at half, I don't think anyone got that uneasy feeling that occurred throughout the Cornell game, with the Orange winning 79-55. Big Man Arinze led all scorers with 19. Devo, who may have had his "senior" day today, followed him up with 13. Like every other Orange fan, I really had no doubt about this game even when it was close.

There have been a lot of stuff happening while I was AFK, but until Devendorf's appeal is done there isn't much to talk about, and the boys don't play again until Monday, so there isn't much basketball to deal with.

We did however, get a new football coach.

Now I'm going to be honest, the hiring of Doug Marrone is a surprise to me. While I was talking to my fellow Warrior on the phone tonight while I donated some money to the Native Americans, we both shared relatively the same views. And here they are:

-We like the fact that Daryl hired a former offensive lineman. This guy played for Coach Mac and is going to be disciplined and will know how to work.

-We don't like Daryl's reasoning during halftime of the basketball game today. He basically said that the fact that he was on a lot of NFL team's coaching lists, that automatically qualified him. He claimed that since he was recommended by some NFL guys, that he would do a great job (...Pete Carrol-like recommendation?).

-We do however, overall think that it is a good hire. Unlike GRob, Marrone has always wanted to be a Head Coach at Syracuse University, not just a Head Coach in general. It is this fella's alma mater and I think he will do alright. Sure he hasn't recruited in a loooooong time but honestly who cares. He has the ability to do it just because he has been through it. He can tell recruits first hand about what Syracuse Football is (used to be) about.

In the meantime we should all eye this appealing process and hope it gets approved. Because maybe, just maybe somehow it might be possible to keep Devo around to beat up on Memphis on the 20th (pun intended).

Can we go back a couple weeks please?

Ouch.

Well, then. Syracuse University could possibly have gone from one extreme to it's polar opposite over the past few weeks. Our basketball team was red-hot, beating BOTH Florida and Kansas (in Kansas City no less) to take home the CBE Tournament in front of millions of ESPN viewers. Our football team had just completed the biggest upset in the illustrious history of Notre Dame football, which was also on national television no less. Heck, even with in the past couple of days Syracuse football signed a two time all-american junior college quarterback.

But when it rains, it pours my friend. Scratch that. When it snows, it blizzards.

There are reports that Skip Holtz said thanks but no thanks. Turner Gill and Daryl are still talking, but so is Auburn. Your guess is pretty much as good as mine when it comes to figuring out who is going to be the next Head Coach. It literally could be anyone/thing. I think Daryl has walk in interviews daily, so feel free to contact him and meet up at the Dunkin' Donuts on the hill. The report says Skip refused a deal that is worth about $12 million. Really? Is it THAT cold here? This coaching drama continues to unfold and it should be interesting to see what happens.

And then there is Devendorf. Like I said before, he is an idiot. But something about this Judicial Board just doesn't seem right. Now granted, they probably know a lot more than anybody here, the "alarmed and annoyed" statement in the Post-Standard report bothers me.

"The Board found that on or about Nov. 1, 2008 at or near 703 Walnut Avenue, you
physically harassed another Syracuse University student by intentionally
striking her with your hand causing her to become alarmed and annoyed,"
according to the letter to Devendorf from Rami Badawy, SU's director of judicial
affairs.
...Really? I get "alarmed and annoyed" when my brother beats me in video games (rarely). I get "alarmed and annoyed" when I get bumped while in line waiting to get my hotdog at the Dome. Listen, I'm sure they probably have a legit reason to suspend him, and they are probably right. But with what a lot of the public in Syracuse think of this Judicial Board, especially considering the recent case of Billy Edelin, you miiiiiiiiight want to handle the publicity on this one a little bit differently. Even Devendorf himself probably got a little annoyed at that one. I read things all over saying "ohhh if Smith slapped him she wouldn't get suspended". But here the thing. It doesn't matter. I personally don't even have a problem (since im a youngin) with him being out on Halloween. And I honestly believe that it is only Smith's side that is being reported in the media completely.

What gets me is that even if Smith's account is 100% true, what's the deal with Rick Jackson then? Wasn't he put on probation after his sexual assault case? If "alarmed and annoyed", or punishing Devo because he was on probation and hurt this girl's feelings, surely kicking someones property would merrit being "alarmed and annoyed"... Hopefully the Judicial Board isn't reading this....

Will the team hurt without Devo? Yeah. But can they win without him? Absolutely. It sould be interesting the reaction he gets from the Dome on Saturday if he starts.

I'll be "mobily" Blogging on the looooooong road trip home from Knoxville tonight and tomorrow... Ah, Technology.

Devo Gone For the Year...

These are not happy times in Cuse Land.  Today, Eric Devendorf received word that he would be suspended the rest of the 2008-2009 season, as well as the entire academic year.  I'm sure much more will come out about this in the next couple of hours and few days, but this is not good.  We currently have the 13th ranked team in the country and a blow like this won't do anything to help out our team.  Like it or not, Eric was one of the keys to Syracuse's impressive start this year. Losing him is gonna be huge.  He can appeal the decision, but I don't think that this will be overturned at all.

Obviously, there isn't really much you can say to defend Devo here.  Sure, there's not any REAL tangible evidence, such as a third party eyewitness.  However, the fact that he put himself in the situation in the first place is the real concern here.  SU basketball players simply can not stay out of trouble in recent years.  This is a growing problem.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you saw a transfer situation coming up soon.  Not saying that I want that to happen whatsoever, but it really would not surprise me at this point if Devedorf was looking to get out of Syracuse in the next few months.  Obviously, this situation would make that harder for him to do.

We'll have more on this in the coming days.

Just a quick post here, check out this nice article by ESPN's Andy Katz about battling cancer, prominently featuring Jim Boeheim.  This is a real nice article, so if you have a few minutes it's a good read.  Try to be back as soon as possible, but you know how Finals week gets.

Holtz to 'Cuse

Syracuse.com has jumped aboard and said that Skip Holtz will be announced as the next Head Coach of the Orange as early as Monday. I guess we'll never know, but I had heard rumors as early as October that we had him locked up (Scroll to #1 on that link). When it gets thrown up on WTVH, as well as Syracuse.com, I think it's getting closer to maybe being the real deal.

Personally, I think it would be a great hire. He has all the pieces that we need to be successful once more. Holtz managed to recruit a ton of talent at ECU, and I think he can do the same with a much more attractive Big East Conference to pitch to recruits. Not bad, Daryl. Not bad at all.

Sorry for the lack of posting this last week and a half. Finals Suck. My fellow warrior's back is probably hurting by now from all the carrying he is doing, but I will post more after my glorious homecoming to the frozen tundra known as Syracuse on Friday!

SU-Cornell Diary Plus More SU Lookalikes

Without further ado, the first ever Saltine Diary!

1st Half

6:49 - I tune in to “CitrusTV” for the ‘Cuse Countdown pre-game show, put on by Syracuse University students.  Going to Ithaca, I honestly have to say, I wasn’t all that impressed.  It was a good show, but coming from Newhouse I guess I might have been looking for something more mind-blowing.  Three observations:

  1. The host is absolutely frightening.  He looks downright devilish whenever he waits for a package to begin, and has a very orangey skin color going on.  Skin that dark, in Syracuse, during December? Someone has obviously been hitting up Total Tan.
  2. One of the color analysts looks EXACTLY like my good buddy from Cornell, Dan Discenza.  (Him and the SU guy are compared at the top).  It's Danny D and SU pre-game color guy lookalike day!) Back when my high school was featured in MTV’s Made, I along with my friend Conor (a dirty Notre Dame fan) made t-shirts with the phrase “Danny D Not Guilty” It looks like this is Danny D’s second stint on television.  Ironically, I am also seeing him for the first time during the game Syracuse plays Cornell.  I am convinced this is really him.
  3. The pre-game show exits with the popular Dr. Dre song Xplosive.  That audio director must have been sleeping in the same place that the team did for the first half, because he forgets to lower the sound when Kurupt’s lyrics begin.  I won’t get into specifics, but let’s just say one is a four-letter word beginning with “S,” while the other was a five-letter word beginning with “N.”  Yeah… Let’s just say that I don’t think the Syracuse producers will be too happy with the individual running the audio board at the end of the telecast.

7:02 – Live from the Carrier Dome, it’s Mark Larson and Danny Liedka with the call from courtside!  Dan is actually my friend Marc’s uncle, so that’s kind of cool.  He is also the mayor of East Syracuse.  I am just full of fun facts tonight.

7:03 – NO! Paul has the cornrows back in place.  It’s a shame he didn’t go all out with the Dr. J look.

7:06 – Cornell is starting a freshman tonight at point guard, as the starter is injured.  If Jonny Flynn doesn’t eat this guy alive and control the game from the opening minute, then I don’t know anything about sports.

7:07 – Cornell Center Jeff Foote is generously listed at 245 pounds, but he is 7 feet tall. Arinze weighs 275 but is only 6’9.  Should be an interesting battle in the post – look for Arinze to muscle him around.  This would be an appropriate time to state that I had a conversation with Jeff Foote last year at an Ithaca party.  Warrants mentioning.

7:09 – Cornell comes out in zone and forces Paul to throw up an off-balance shot the first possession.  Ryan Wittman, Cornell’s all-time leader in 3-point percentage, hits a deep one on their first possession.  Hopefully that doesn’t keep up.

7:10 – Jonny’s on the board. Cease the clapping.

7:11 – And one for Cornell.  Danny Liedka gives us this gem: “This is a very smart team.  They go to Cornell, they’re smart for a reason.”  I loved that.

7:11 – Paul gets a dunk from a Jonny pass, 6-4 Cornell.  Arinze gets a rebound and collides with someone knocking him to the floor, leading Danny to drop another one:  “I don’t know if Tyler’s a physics major, but if u go up and challenge Onuaku, you’re probably gonna lose.”  He’s on his A-game tonight!

7:12 – Cornell hits another 3, making it 9-4.  Is anyone really worried yet though?  We might need to put the clamps down with a quick switch to man to man.  SU calls timeout and Rick is already subbed in for Arinze.

7:15 – Joseph is in and immediately scores off a turnover on a 2-on-1 fast break with Devendorf.  Nice.

7: 16 – Nice up and under by Jeff Foote.  He’s pretty coordinated but his legs look like Twizzlers.

7:16 – Pull up 3 by Jonny, making it 13-9 Cornell.  He’s got 5, which takes us to the first media timeout.

7:21 – Cornell hits their 4th three on a ridiculous bounce that hit the rim at least 3 times, and Syracuse is losing 20-9. What the hell are they doing right now? It looks like we’re going to have to overcome yet another early deficit.

7:24 – 25-9 Cornell after a 16-3 run. This is getting a little out of hand, and there could be trouble if we don’t stop the run right now.

7:28 – Syracuse answers with a Rautins 3 and some free throws by Devendorf. 27-16. We can deal with this.

7:32 – Syracuse is playing ridiculously sloppy and keeps throwing up unwarranted 3 pointers. Why are we playing like we’re Cornell and they’re Syracuse? BODY THEM UP! YOU ARE BIG EAST ATHLETES! THEY ARE IN THE IVY LEAGUE!

7: 36 – Slowly getting back in it again. 33-24 Cornell after 2 free throws from Paul Harris.  Those FTs would have been a dunk if Andy Rautins passed the ball up earlier on the fast break. Single digits.

7:37 – Paul is taking over. 33-28 Cornell after 4 quick points. “It’s turning out to be a good hair day!” Danny Liedka exclaims!

7:40 – Paul rebounds and pushes the ball up the court quickly, where Arinze is fouled on a lay-up attempt. Arinze, very Shaq-like from the line, misses both.  His free throw and shooting percentages should be flipped.

7:43 – Random question: what is Andy Rautins attempting to accomplish with his hair?  My partner in crime tonight, Jeff Benz, made the comparison between Andy and English Premier League footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. Their hair is exactly the same! From now on we are only referring to him as Cristiano Rautins.

7:45 – Suddenly, Syracuse can’t score and Cornell has regained control.  The score sits at 35-29.  Jim is not going to be a happy camper in the locker room at half time.

7:48 – Wittman has 4 threes in the first half as the score is stretched to 38-29. His stroke is very reminiscent of a former CNY high school star, Cicero-North Syracuse’s Dan Benz.  Both could really shoot a three ball.

7:50 – With 1:55 remaining in the first half, Devendorf makes 2 free throws and the score sits at 40-32. They can’t seem to get it under 7 or 8.

7:53 – The Orange are within 6 as Devendorf hits 2 more free throws.  Less then a minute to go in the half.  Cue the full court press!

7:56 – Rautins tries a skyyy high three from around half court at the buzzer that almost falls. Cornell leads by 5, 40-35. In the words of the real Danny D, “No reason to ever be down against Cornell when their team’s combined weight is prolly less than Onuaku’s.” I completely agree.  He goes to Cornell, so he would know.

What a rollercoaster ride of a first half.  Let’s take a look at some key points:

  • For one, we obviously came out of the gate flatter then Kate Bosworth.  The guys were still taking their pre-game nap or something.  How were we ever down 22-9 at one point? It should have been the other way around.
  • Jonny is playing well, as anticipated.  He was really the only one who seemed to be ready from the start, as he has 13 points at half.  I look for him to finish with around 23 or 24, and to keep leading the charge.
  • Where’s Arinze? The announcers are talking about how badly Jeff Foote is outplaying him.  That is a sad statement, and it just can’t happen.

What’s my guess? I think SU pulls out a routine victory as they come out for the 2nd half with their heads on straight.  Something tells me that Jimmy is gonna take care of that inspiration in the locker room. We’ll see shortly.

2nd Half

8:12 – Syracuse starts with the ball and Arinze immediately hits a hook shot and gets fouled, 18 seconds in. Hits the free throw. Syracuse down 2 points, 40-38. Do you think they might have told everyone to get him the damn ball?

8:13 – BULL-SHOT! Kristof swoops in with a monster block on a jump hook that was probably goaltending.  Regardless, that’s how they do it in Belgium, boys.

8:17 – The Orange inexcusably get out-hustled by Foote for a loose ball, after a desperation heave by Wittman to beat the shot clock.  Liedka says of Foote, “Remember when you were playing wiffleball and someone hit it over a neighbor’s fence because no one could reach it?  He could reach it.” Yes he could. Foote follows that up with a huge dunk inside to make it 42-38 Cornell.

8:20 – The game is tied! Steal by Rick Jackson, who throws it up for Jonny, who calmly throws down a two handed dunk. Why am I getting so excited to pull into a tie with Cornell? I don’t know.

8:21 – Devendorf makes a nice lefty lay-up to give SU their first lead, and Wittman answers right back with a three.

8:23 – Phenomenal lefty lay-up in transition by Jonny Flynn, who for no reason proceeds to scream for 5 seconds after the play. Liedka gushes about his body control, commenting that Cornell attempted drawing a charge but he maneuvered right by them.

8:26 – Wittman hits his 6th (!) three to give Cornell a 48-46 lead. Devendorf follows that with a charge. Great.

8:28 – Wittman hits his 7th(!!) three, which gives him his career high in that department.  What the hell?

8:30 – Arinze hits an easy lay-up, a long Cornell rebound goes to Kris Joseph, and then Jonny Flynn takes over.  He gets the ball on the sideline, takes off, and dunks two handed with some FORCE. Very nice play.

8:33 – Rautins hits a three and ties the game at 53.  Both squads trade a couple buckets, making the score 57-57.  Cornell is not backing down whatsoever.

8:46 – Huge run by Syracuse as they eventually push the lead to 11 with 7:30 to go.  They finally remembered who they were, and what team they were playing!

8:47 – Two more threes by Wittman, who is quickly closing in on the Carrier Dome record for threes.  He is unconscious right now.

8:48 – Jonny answers with a three of his own to give Syracuse an 8-point lead again.

8:50 – ANOTHER three for Cornell, and the Orange answers with Onuaku running over everyone down low for a lay-up.  How does Arinze not have 30 by now? What happened to giving him the ball every time down the floor in the second half?

8:51 – Nice lefty lay-in on a drive to the hoop by Flynn. 77-69 SU with under four to go.

8:53 – Jeff Foot’s face now resembles a boxer after 10 rounds.  His cheeks are so big that they’re frightening and his lip looks a little fat too.  Big East centers beware, Arinze is a very large and physical man to guard.

8:57 – Devendorf scores his 14th point on a nice drive through the lane through the left side for an and one, which followed a lay-up by him on the previous possession.  He knocks down the accompanying free throw to make it 82-71 Orange.

9:00 – Cornell hits their 13th three of the night, only 3 shy of the Carrier Dome record.  They foul Syracuse the next time down, and it looks like they’re going to turn it into a free throw contest.

9:04 – Cristiano Rautins is intentionally fouled, and hits 1 of 2 free throws.  Arinze is fouled right after that and also splits a pair, making it 86-74.

9:05 – Aaand Arinze just air-balled a free throw.  Really gotta work on those.  There was a terrific exchange that showed Devendorf in the background when he appeared to be asking Arinze if he just shot an air ball.  Arinze turned around for a second, then looked forward again with a dead serious face as the ball came back to him for his second shot.  Instantly, you see Devendorf start cracking up in the background of the shot.  I can only wish to know the exchange of words that just happened between those two.

9:07 – Wittman adds another 2 to give him 33 for the night.  Great performance by him.  The game ends after that with SU winning, 88-78.  Cornell hit 13 threes, 9 by Wittman alone. The Big Red battled the Orange all night.  You certainly have to give them credit for their play.  Boeheim moves into a tie for tenth on the all-time career wins list.

9:09 – Danny Liedka is courtside with Jonny Flynn after the game, after yet another great performance.  Jonny attributes Cornell’s hot start to what the team evidently calls “Dome-phobia,” meaning other teams come in and shoot the lights out to start but inevitably cool down.  Well alright, then.  Let’s ease up on allowing “Dome-phobia” by the time January rolls around, okay?

So, Syracuse obviously made that a lot harder than they needed to, leaving room for Cornell to stay with them the entire game.  At the end of the day, it’s safe to say that we all knew Syracuse was going to come back; it was just a matter of when.  They took longer to complete the “when” than any of us would like.

Cornell shot the lights out, making 45% of their threes with Wittman making 9.  He upped his career high just a game after setting it with 33 points total.  Overall, it was a very impressive showing by the Big Red.  They should do major damage in the Ivy League this year, showing why they were picked to finish first in the preseason.

As for the Orange, the entire team sans Jonny Flynn was sleepwalking in that first half.  Speaking of Mr. Flynn, he finished with 24 points and 6 assists, and played an excellent game even with his 6 turnovers.  Paul Harris had another strong game with 21 and 9.  Onuaku rose from his slumber in the 2nd half to score 12 on perfect 5-5 shooting.  I think his goal is to shoot above 85% for the year.  Stay tuned for more of that story.

From a fan’s standpoint, as bad and sloppy as Syracuse played this game, you can’t take the lack of intensity too seriously.  They’re coming off an emotional week and it’s nice for them to get a few easy games in a row.  You’d like them to keep coming with that edge they had at Colgate, but you’re being unrealistic if you expect potency such as that game in and game out.

An interesting note from a substitution standpoint is that Mookie Jones didn’t play once again.  That kind of makes you wonder what it is with him that just isn’t panning out so far.  Is he not performing in practice?  Why doesn’t Boeheim trust him?  If he can’t crack the rotation against Cornell, will he even play the rest of the year?  Regardless, it’s certainly an interesting subplot to continue to follow throughout the year.

If you liked, disliked, or were even indifferent about the diary, write your comments below.  That’s all I have from the first ever Saltine Diary tonight.  Syracuse is on a 10-day break in the action, so hopefully when they take the floor against the mighty Long Beach State 49ers they’ll bring their A-game!  Try to contain yourselves from missing basketball too much, and dive right into the thick of the new SU football coach search. Talk to you soon.

Running Diary to be Posted Later Tonight

For the Syracuse-Cornell game tonight, I will be doing the first ever Saltine Diary (catchy huh?).  Check back later for the post.  Look out for a guest appearance from a fellow 'Cuse fan at Ithaca College that will be helping out with my analysis.

SU-Colgate Aftermath

We're not gonna get into an in-depth recap of this game because, let's face it, it wasn't much of a game.  I think Coach Q's Lady Orange would have given the guys a better run than Colgate did last night.  Let's take a look at the wider spectrum from that game:
  • First and foremost, PAUL'S HAIR!! That was truly a magnificent sight.  It was incredible.  There aren't even enough cool adjectives to describe Paul's hair last name.  I blame our potent performance solely on his decision to wear the pony-tail/fro look, and nobody can tell me otherwise.  It will be a real shame if he actually does end up cutting it like he hinted at.
  • Syracuse in the first 5 minutes of this game played just about as perfectly you can in a basketball game.  I mean, people were just getting into their seats after trudging up the hill and we were already up 17-2 before the 15:00 mark.  Just an all-around dominating performance.
  • Syracuse shot 23.5% from 3 ... and still won by 35.  This is just Colgate, but regardless of the competition, that's very, very impressive.
  • The overall competitive edge to this team is the best of any since, well, you already know.  I hate to keep bringing up the comparisons, but look at the way we manhandled the Red Raiders last night.  Coming off 2 grueling wins, we needed an easy won.  That was put to rest after Jonny Flynn scored 5 points in about 30 seconds.  The team knew Colgate sucked, knew we were the hot knew topic, and knew that a letdown game or at least a close outcome was very much possible ... yet we still laid the smack-down similar to Dwayne Johnson.  We were toying with Colgate yet still maintained, for the most part, a strong focus and tight, unsloppy (that isn't a word) play.  Really positive signs this early in the year.
  • If above all else you completely disregarded everything I just said as nonsense, and you wanted one sentence to sum up this game, think about this:  Justin Thomas entered last night's game somewhere between 13 and 12 minutes left, in the FIRST HALF.  When is the last time you remember Jim Boeheim, of all people, putting a walk-on into the game in the first half? With over 12 minutes left? Has that ever happened? Seriously, I would love to know the previous record for Boeheim's earliest walk on sub.  I remember back when I was 8 or 9 when Jimmy refused to sub-in Donovan McNabb any time over 1:30 left in the game with a lead less than about 25.   And that was for one of the best athletes in the country.  Now Justin Thomas is getting time?  Explain to me again why I didn't dedicate my life to going to Syracuse and becoming a walk-on for the team.
Tomorrow, my neighbors across the hill in Ithaca, the Cornell Big Red, invade the Dome looking for a win.  They were picked to finish atop the Ivy League conference, but have stumbled out of the gate to a 4-3 record.  If I were a betting man, I'd be taking SU all the way, regardless of the spread.  Look for a huge win as the Orange take down the Red.

By the way, on a scale of 1 to 10, how stupid are color nicknames?  This will never stop pissing me off.  Orangemen and Orangewomen was just fine.  Even those weren't even actual objects, but they were just fine.  Why did we change to the Orange again? To be politically correct? I guess it could be worse and we could be like Cornell, calling ourselves the "Big" Orange or something.  That is just appalling, to call yourself the "Big Red."  Like that's somehow intimidating, a large color.  This continuously makes me livid.  Okay, I'm now going to quit while I'm ahead.

Prediction:  Syracuse 91, Cornell 70
Let's put a large, backside beatdown on the Big Red.  Perhaps we'll even have a running diary.  Check back tomorrow.

Syracuse-Colgate Preview...

There is about a .001% chance we lose this game. Syracuse dominates every position on the floor, so for Colgate to win this game they need to do one of two things:
1) Their guards have to catch fire and burn so long that the Dome goes up in flames.
2) Pretend that this was last year's Colgate and Syracuse teams (and frankly, that won't be enough either)

I don't really know all too much about Colgate, except that they have decent shooters. But honestly, in college basketball today, who DOESN'T have good shooters on their team? The game has evolved so much at all positions.

I do remember last season Colgate lost to Team America in their conference final. So while not a tournament team, they were pretty competitive. Big problem being, their leading scorer Kyle Roemer is out for the season with an injury.

Sorry, Colgate. You lost 42 straight times and it's about to be 43.

Syracuse 93
Colgate 68
